so it's sunday, and i've been doing nothing but working on this research paper on the physiology topic of animal nutrition with an emphasis on domestic dogs (canis familiaris, as opposed to canis lupos which is a wild dog or wolf). pretty intense findings so far. i thought i'd throw some facts out there for those that love their pets.
The top six REALLY harmful things to feed your dog.
Chocolate,
i know what youre thinking, "my dog ate chocolate once and nothing happened..what gives?"
well, nothing gives chocolate contains two things that are really bad. Caffeine and theobromine. Theobromine is naturally in
the cacao bean and is actually used as medicine as a diuretic, vasodilator and myocardial stimulant... and caffeine..you should
already know about. These things can kill your dog over a period of time, like cholesterol to us human animals.
Onions & Garlic,
yup, no lushous onions for the poochies. In larger quantities and onion or garlic can cause hemolytic anemia, which for the
more simple translation is a really bad blood disorder.. hence the prefix HEMO... meaning blood..dont be dumb.
Garlic can actually be found in some dog treats and that's because in small doses it can be beneficial to dogs.. but no on
the onions..k?
Raisins and Grapes,
These two are pretty crazy. The reason I say that is because it has yet to be known why or what causes it but, a grape in
most cases causes a poison reaction in the dogs system. Raisins in any amount have been known to cause instant toxic
reactions...so that's a big hell no on raisins...and a, really, you shouldnt feed your dogs grapes for the grapes.
Alcohol,
It's never Miller time for your best friend. Dogs systems absorb at a rate much higher than ours (obviously depending on
the size of the pooch). The reactions of alcohol in a dog can cause some serious consiquences. Kidney failure, severe
inebriation that unto death, heart arrythmia...and so on and so on...
so you drink it... you can handle it ... your buddy cant.
so, for those of you who have a dog, thinking about getting a dog, or know someone of the later... pay attention.
I also have some remarkable findings on the lies of dog food marketing.. if youre interested email or whatever.
